Greek Mythology Inspired
Continuous project inspired by Greek Mythology imagery and stories.
Inspired by Greek Mythology, this series brings to life a creative vision of the famously known stories and characters; The Fall of Icarus, Orpheus and Eurydice, and many more. For a short synapsis of each image and the creative choices behind it, see below.
The Fall of Icarus - "Icarus"
Inspired by the tragic death of Icarus, this image ties the tale with the photographers home of Western Australia. After King Minos discovered the Icarus' father, Daedalus, had aided Theseus in defeating the Minotaur, he punished both father and son by locking them away. The image has a falling figure depicted as Icarus descending into a field of golden-yellow canola flowers, creating a situation where he is falling both into and because of the sunlight. The Fremantle lighthouse stands in the background as a reference to the tower Icarus is fleeing.
Orpheus in the Underworld - "Orpheus and Eurydice"
Not long after Orpheus and Eurydice's marriage, Eurydice is bitten by venomous snake and passes. Consumed by both his grief and love, Orpheus ventures to the underworld and strikes a deal with Hades: he can revive his wife and return with her to the overworld, if he can make the journey without turning around before they are both out. After days trudging through the underworld, they make it to the edge of the overworld, but before they pass through, Orpheus turns - some stories say due to Eurydice tripping, because the worry of her not being there becomes to much, or because he misjudges and believes she has already stepped out - and see's her only for a moment before she is dragged back. The image uses saturation to depict the over- and underworld, and makes reference to an interesting parallel in some version of the story; Orpheus leads Eurydice into the forest that she dies in, much the same as he attempts to lead her back to life.
Hades Takes His Bride - "Persephone"
After meeting Persephone, Hades decides that she will be his bride and opens a crack in the Earth, riding his chariot passed the field she is in and grabbing her. He takes her back to the Underworld where she remains.
